Basic Principle of LMD

• Gas molecules absorb specific wavelength of light
• The existence of methane gas is determined by the amount of absorption of light, whose frequency is tuned to a specific wavelength for the methane gas.
• To allow for atmosphere absorption, 2beams of light with slightly different tuning are used and then compared.
• By comparing signal intensities of the lights reflected back from a target, absorption due to the existence of methane gas is extracted.
